With a rotating slate of food sorting projects, volunteers with Second Harvest enjoy a diverse array of ways to impact the Spokane community.
PayTracers Leon W. and James E. spent some of their volunteer hours repacking bulk frozen sliced carrots into smaller packages. Those packages were distributed to various locations around Spokane. In a two-hour sorting session, their afternoon group repackaged 2,300 pounds of frozen carrots.
“Frozen carrots get heavy after a while,” Leon said, recalling the experience.
He chose to break up larger chunks of carrots so they could be dispersed among three sorting tables. The only way to efficiently break up the frozen carrot bricks was through brute force, slamming the carrots (still encased in plastic bags and cardboard boxes) against the floor or hitting them with hammers.
“I’ve been volunteering with Second Harvest in various capacities for many years, but in the past couple of years with PayTrace, it’s become a regular place for me to serve,” said James.
Other volunteer projects with Second Harvest include repacking various pastas, sorting fresh produce, building weekend meal boxes for area students. With online scheduling available, Second Harvest makes it easy to plan volunteer time around work schedules.
PayTracers work and live throughout the Pacific Northwest. Learn more about contributions to our community at PayTrace.net/Community.
