Lending a hand with Tom’s Turkey Drive

Few community events draw out volunteers each year like Tom’s Turkey Drive in Spokane. This successful annual charity event started with KREM weatherman Tom Sherry in 1999, and continues to grow each year.

For the past two decades, Tom’s Turkey Drive has helped families throughout the Spokane area put food on the table for the Thanksgiving holiday. Each year the program provides around 11,000 Thanksgiving meals to the community. This year, Marcy T. volunteered with the program for the first time alongside multiple PayTracers.

Stories collected from the two-day event speak to the heart of generosity throughout the region. You can learn more about the event at krem.com.

“One lady came in and purchased 100 bags, which totals $2,000. People are so generous; it just humbles me,” said Marcy T.

While the colder November weather is certainly a factor to weigh in for this service project, Marcy found a role that struck a happy medium between indoor and outdoor help.

“I didn’t have to brave the cold weather much, but I picked up $20 bags purchased by shoppers at the checkout. We then transported full carts out to the big truck outside and we kept restocking the bags at various tables by the checkouts,” she said.
